I've looked at some booking websites and the few that I found available are closer to $3,000 (2 nights). Not sure if I'm searching too early but I was hoping to have more options to pick from. Although it can be a little isolated, it is the perfect place for a walk early in the morning and a great view of Mount Fuji on a clear day (see picture). The rooms are big by Japan standard and comfortable.

When we were there recently, we did the Hakone Free Pass plus Romance car and enjoyed it very much. He is considering a tour through JTB which goes by bus in the morning leaving Tokyo at 9 and returning by shinkansen around 8.
