The United States acquired the Philippines after the Spanish-American War in 1898. The Philippines had rebelled against Spain in 1897. Its population as determined by the 2024 Census was 4,404,288. This represented 16.78% of the overall population of the Mindanao island group, or 4.04% of the entire population of the Philippines.
