It can read temp about anywhere you can hold a flame over it. Getting a good accurate reading is on the sending unit to the gauges. I'm sure you can get a flux in locations. You can even put a sending unit In the bottom of your oil pan and read the oil temp.

I don't really trust the stock temp gauges so I also run an Autometer aftermarket gauge mounted under my dash. I put the sender in the thermostat housing.
